Calculating route and section train speed
Analytics and delivery of work on calculating route speed across divisions and section speed, accounting for stop time at intermediate stations.
Calculation context
Two speed metrics with different logic
Route speed is calculated from train formation to its breakup. Section speed accounts for the train's time on the section, including stops at intermediate stations, acceleration, deceleration and delays between stations.
Route speed
Calculated across divisions, from train formation to breakup.
Section speed
Average speed on the section, calculated accounting for stop time at intermediate stations.
Data
Analysis of database tables for scoping the calculations.
What we did
Four blocks of analytical and technical work
Route speed, backend
Scoping the backend task for calculating route speed across divisions, and analyzing database tables.
Route speed, frontend
Scoping the frontend task for building the corresponding forms.
Section speed, backend
Scoping the task for calculating section speed and analyzing database tables.
Section speed, frontend
Scoping the frontend task for building the corresponding forms.

Workflow logic: from database tables to analysis forms
The diagram below visualizes only the elements of the work explicitly stated in the project document. This is not a reconstruction of the interface.
Outcome
Calculations worked out at the data, backend and frontend level
The work included analyzing database tables and formulating backend calculation and frontend form tasks for route and section speed.
Data analysis
Analysis of database tables for the metric-calculation tasks.
Scoping calculation tasks
Calculating route speed across divisions and calculating section speed.
Scoping form tasks
Building the corresponding forms for analyzing both metrics.
Route and section speed in one analytical task
The work connected data analysis, backend calculation logic and frontend forms for two railway speed metrics.
